USA Restaurants

Our favorite restaurants in the US

Murphy’s, Atlanta

Until this evening's visit, I had only frequented Murphy's in the Virginia/Highland area for Sunday brunch. Loved their basket of fresh muffins and biscuits that accompanied menu offerings - and their freshly brewed coffee. Just looking for something light, we just shared a few thing starting with flash-fried tender sweet calamari ($11) . This wasn't served with the typical warm marinara sauce but with two sauces: a cocktail one usually accompanying other shellfish plus  a weird sauce of apple cider vinegar, diced Granny smith apples, garlic and crushed pink peppercorns. In addition, we split an entree portion of  Murphy's Caesar salad with their crispy shaved onion rings and spicy croutons [...]

Michael’s Downtown in Blue Pearl Space, New Haven

Okay folks - they just opened so give them some time to get in the groove of things, but Michael's downtown is in the spot on Court Street formerly occupied by The Blue Pearl. Featuring steaks, fish and pasta, the restaurant is owned by the same family responsible for Michael's Trattoria in Wallingford.  I was downtown, saw the lights and happened to walk in on their first night open for business. They're still working on the decor, which is currently warmer than Blue Pearl, but not yet complete, and they served me a delicious plate of mussels, but didn't have any bread or pasta to go with it.... yet.  So [...]

Kellys Restaurant & Bar

Met some friends downtown for a midday nibble at Kelly's Restaurant & Bar in the former Amalfi Grill (and short-lived) Marius on the corner of Crown and Temple just up the street from the Criterion (BowTie) Cinemas. While looking over the menu we tried their Cucumber Bloody Mary with a pronounced flavor came from the Crop cucumber vodka ($8). Nice. The kitchen 86ed my first order of goat cheese croquettes. After sampling the artfully presented creamy risotto cake ($6.95) topped with a thin Portabella mushroom and basil infused goat cheese (with some pesto drizzled, too), I know I'll return. This dish alone is worth the visit. (In restaurant-speak, 86 means [...]

Holeman & Finch Public House

We started with the small pot of decadently rich chicken liver pate sealed with apple cider jelly accompanied by green tomato pickle and toast ($7). Worth the visit alone. Loving good bread, we added an order of the H&F Bread Box ($5); so worth the calories. Our bottle of a Domaine de boisson, cotes du rhone, France, ($36) worked well with the pate. We shared an order of their roasted baby carrots ($9) and pickled green strawberries (yes strawberries!) topped with a chiffon of fresh sorrel. Also good was the fish (flounder) and chips (potato wedges) served British-style, with a vinegar dip ($14). In addition, we had some pasta carbonara, a [...]

Little Jerusalem at the Anna Ticho House

Jerusalemites are no different from other folks when it comes to procrastinating. My cousin Yona had heard good things about Little Jerusalem, the wonderful dairy restaurant at the Anna Ticho House, and she used the occasion of our visit to Jerusalem to try it out. Better late than never. After scrambling along a dusty path, partially blocked by construction, we emerged onto a sunny stone patio overlooking a serene olive garden and tables filled with happily chatting diners. It was a warm day, but Owner-Manager Nava Bibi, who previously had managed the kitchen at the King David Hotel, told us portable heaters make al fresco dining possible from April to [...]

Park’s Edge, Atlanta

While perusing the Park's Edge menu, we inquired about the grilled peach and burrata salad we had seen on the website. Our waitress mentioned that peaches were out of season. She wrote down our order, hesitated a moment and added, the burrata was out of season, too. We held our laughter until she walked away, knowing that she had no idea what she was talking about. Burrata isn't seasonal, it's just a fresh cheese made form mozzarella and cream. That was the first of her many faux pas. We chose a bottle of an Argentinian Los Cardos Malbec ($36) and then started with roasted garlic bulbs ($3) that spread heavenly [...]

Prasad Chirnomula at the James Beard House

Lucky, lucky me.  I got to attend the incredible dinner earlier this month at the James Beard House in New York City (167 W 12th Street) where Prasad Chirnomula — of Thali, Thali Too and Oaxaca fame — prepared a show-stopping meal combining the cuisines of India and Mexico — “Mole to Masala” As they poured Roederer Estate Brut Rosé NV, waiters passed Crispy Pork Belly Tacos (my personal favorite served on a bed of raw corn kernels), Crab and Ginger Samosas, Miniature Chorizo–Buffalo Burgers and Seven-Spice Mushrooms while all the guests mingled. (The Chorizo–Buffalo Burgers were attractively served on a bed of uncooked red lentils. Note to self: remember [...]

Barcelona: Be Sure to Check Your Bill

I always look over my bill, as sometimes restaurants make honest mistakes. Let me back up first. I stopped by Barcelona in New Haven recently on a Sunday evening after a movie at the Criterion. Our waitress informed us that bottles of wine were half price. Music to our ears! We ordered a bottle of a 2009 Ochoa, a Granache and Tempranillo blend from the Navarra region of Spain — a bargain at $24 before the half price special. We then looked over the menu to select a couple tapas. The sauteed cauliflower ($6.50) was perfectly cooked, sprinkled with Spanish paprika and Manchego cheese. Also delicious were the Chorizo with [...]

Scena Wine Bar & Restaurant, Darien CT

Don't you just love tripping over a good restaurant? That's what happened recently on a trip home from NYC, when dropping a friend at the parking lot of the Darien train station. We had enjoyed a huge fabulous lunch at Tocqueville in the city, and it wasn't until we arrived in Darien that we realized we needed just a little something to eat. We notice the warm light coming through the windows at Scena on the Post Road, thinking, "How bad could it be for a glass of wine and nibble?"  We were pleasantly surprised. Along with a crisp glass of Oyster Bay (New Zealand) Sauvignon Blanc ($8) we sampled [...]

Drinking & Fooding at Don Bernardo

Sometimes you just need to go out on a food adventure. I have to credit my girlfriend for really pushing to go out on a night where I was headed for a Doner Kebab and bed. Part of the travel experience is getting out to sample some of the best of a city's restaurants. We were only going to spend two nights in Valencia and our first night's dinner was a bit odd to say the least. We got into the city late and on a Spanish holiday to boot. As such, our restaurant options were few and far between. We settled on a pre-fixe menu, hoping to be sated [...]

YOLO, Fort Lauderdale

You only live once: the name and motto of the fabulous hip restaurant YOLO on Los Olas Boulevard. Actually YOLO has two bars and a garden patio with an open fire pit. And after dining,  you can head Vibe, to the hot disco next door also owned by Tom Petrillo's The Restaurant Group. (Click here for details on how you can  win a gift certificate to YOLO.) Our group headed there after an exhilarating third day on our Spa-Chic press trip at the W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. After our morning beach walk, we sampled classes from ProPilates at a W Wellness Happening with locals invited. The exhausting but oh, [...]

New Haven’s Scoozzi Closed After 24 Years in Business

Scoozzi Trattoria and Wine Bar on Chapel Street with the unusual outdoor seating, located right next to Yale Rep in New Haven has closed suddenly after 24 years in business. BOTB had written about dining there both as part of an Arts & Ideas restaurant tour, and for dining al fresco on the outdoor patio. If you call the restaurant, you'll still greeted by voicemail, but not to take your reservation. Instead, you'll hear, "Thank you for calling Scoozzi, as of Tuesday, October 25 we are closed for business. We’d like to thank everyone for their patronage over the last 24 years. Steak 954, Fort Lauderdale

On the ground floor of the trendy W in Fort Lauderdale, is Steven Starr's Steak 954 with similar pulse of the hotel's Whiskey Blue disco: dark and a bit noisy yet very hip and fun. Steak 954 is a boutique steak house serving more than just meat and potatoes. (954, by the way, is the local area code!) Since I was with a group of journalists on a Spa-Chic press trip staying at the W, we never saw the menu. Instead we had family-style tasting of many restaurant offering served with two Casa Lapostolle wines: 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Rapel Valley and the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, Rapel Valley. The prices I'm [...]
