Larkburger’s short-menu includes its Cattlemen’s Select 100% Black Angus beef Larkburger, turkey burger, tuna burger and portabella mushroom burger, fresh salads with house-made dressings, Breyers chocolate and vanilla shakes, and the ever-popular truffle and parmesan hand-cut fries. Rizzuto’s in Westport, CT

Lucky me! I met Rizzuto's publicist for lunch recently at the restaurant located in the Saugatuck section of Westport, and ended up trying many of their delightful and delicious menu items featuring simple ingredients in classic presentations. We began with their vegetable antipasto that included Roman artichokes, Mediterranean olives, roasted sweet Tuscan peppers, marinaded mushrooms, chickpea puree and a Sicilian eggplant caponata ($6, each). The latter two are house-made and served with fresh oven-fired flatbread. Note to self: be sure to return for a light meal of just the delicious homemade antipasto and a glass of wine. We continued to eat our way through the menu. Next we had an [...]

Worst Pizza

I'm all about sharing a good resource when I find one. I never used to understand all the discussion over pizza. There were so many blogs dedicated to the best pizza places, where to find a good slice, etc. It was all foreign to me. I had the luxury of growing up in an area of the country (New Haven) that is considered to be a pizza mecca. All our pizza places were good, heck.. there wasn't a Pizza Hut or Dominoes that would even set foot in our town, it was a waste of everyone's time. New Haven has a plethora of honorable mentions on any 'top pizza' list, [...]

Mote Con Huesillos in Santiago, Chile

Lucky is an understatement. My plane left Santiago just a couple hours prior to Saturday morning's earthquake, learning about it only after landing at JFK while in the immigration line watching CNN on the overhead screens.  I can't get the stunned and horrified looks on the faces of fellow passengers out of my head. I had been in Chile as a guest of the Chilean Fresh Fruit Association to learn about their agricultural exports of fresh fruit, olive oil and wine. Last week, I visited Santiago, the  surrounding valleys and coast - areas affected by the quake. I'll be posting lots more about the cuisine and food products of Chile, [...]

Hattie’s in Dallas

Our evening out in Dallas began with a bang…when we decided to go to Hattie’s in Oak Cliff’s Bishop Arts District. Blew out a tire on 8th Street about a block from the restaurant, but did the sensible thing that anyone wanting good food would do: left the car to fix later and walked through the rain into the cozy world of Hattie’s. Hattie’s spare décor, black and white tiled floor, and tin roof instantly makes you feel like you are in New Orleans at Galatoires. I was craving the pecan-crusted catfish, which did not let me down. Started with a bowl of the lobster bisque ($8.95), with sweet pieces [...]

Kitchen Challenge: Baked Alaska

There are certain dishes that I've just never gone near. It's not that I won't eat them (I'll eat anything), it's that I'm not going to try and make it myself. Blowfish, for example.. if cut incorrectly, can kill you... so I'll leave dishes with that ingredient to the trained chefs. My home kitchen is a place for many experiments, but some creations just seem either to dangerous or like too much work! For me, desserts in general always seem a daunting task. There's so much mixing and measuring, kneading and rolling, crimping and icing. It can be such a tiring endeavor, that I often leave it to a restaurant's [...]

The Corner in Milford, for Sunday Brunch

My friend Diane and I like to catch up over Sunday brunch — generally trying new places but sometimes returning to ones we've liked.  We returned to The Corner (Milford, CT) — a cozy place filled with regulars (we know as we chatted with many of them while waiting for a table). When asked what's good, one of the regulars said, "Everything!"  This regular has been coming for years and had worked his way down the menu, trying each and every unusual offering on it. Their brunch items are a bit different than the regular omelets and pancakes usually found — although you can order those, too.  This time we [...]

Greek Islands Taverna, Ft. Lauderdale

In trying to find a decent spot to eat in the Fort Lauderdale area, I reached out across social media.  My friend Jim Bozzi responded on Facebook sharing info about the Greek Isles Taverna, "Delicious authentic Greek food...Does not take reservations like a Pepe's (in New Haven, CT). But everyone we ran in to reco'd it. Went last night. Deee-lish!" My sister and I decided to give it a try. The place was jammed with long — but fast moving — lines. We waited only 15 minutes to be seated and begin nibbling the complementary garlicky hummus. While in line, I had read an article on the wall from the [...]

Iphone Beer App

I always thought apps and beer went great together! I mean, give me mussels and beer, charcuterie and beer, cheese and beer, heck.. beer and pretzels! Oh how things change, even words change. The word app could not be mistaken for anything but an appetizer in years past, but now it's a whole new ballgame. An app now refers to an 'application', a program that runs on any one of the countless devices you likely have with you right now. Stella Artois has recently launched their own app for the iphone. Le Bar Guide helps beer connoisseurs locate a perfectly poured glass of Belgian beer (specifically, Stella). The app is [...]

Colicchio & Sons Just Opened in NYC

As read in Zagat Buzz's notable opening in New York City: Colicchio & Sons at 85 10th Avenue, New York, NY (212-400-6699) in the former digs of Craftsteak. Tom Colicchio now offers a locavorish New American menu that’s a version of his Tom: Tuesday Dinner concept, focusing on improvisation, small-batch fare and farm-fresh ingredients.  The large main dining room still retains its wine-rack room divider and mural of Way West Chelsea, but feels cozier.  The casual bar area offers artisanal beers and nibbles from a wood-burning oven. I've added Colicchio & Sons to my ever-growing must-try list! Stay tuned! - bonnie Colicchio & Sons 85 10th Avenue 212-400-6699

Ganja Gourmet

We've sampled a lot of interesting products on Bite of the Best, but some new ingredients I never thought I'd see on the national food stage. While the debate about the uses and safety of marijuana will likely continue to rage on in the United States for the rest of foreseeable time, the situation does seem to be continually changing. Though the U.S. has long considered the plant illegal, nowadays, more and more states are flirting with the idea of decriminalizing 'medicinal marijuana'. The whole system is quite confusing to be frank; it seems a convoluted maze of local, state and federal laws and authorities, each contradicting the other. But, [...]
