I always thought apps and beer went great together! I mean, give me mussels and beer, charcuterie and beer, cheese and beer, heck.. beer and pretzels! Oh how things change, even words change. The word app could not be mistaken for anything but an appetizer in years past, but now it’s a whole new ballgame. An app now refers to an ‘application’, a program that runs on any one of the countless devices you likely have with you right now.Le Bar Guide Iphone App

Stella Artois has recently launched their own app for the iphone. Le Bar Guide helps beer connoisseurs locate a perfectly poured glass of Belgian beer (specifically, Stella). The app is available to download free from the Apple App Store.

The application combines the street view on the iphone with digital images overlaid to provide an interactive guide to nearby bars.  Searches can be organized by country, zip code or rating.  With the iphone held vertically, Le Bar Guide reveals profiles of bars in the immediate vicinity, with graphics overlaid on the street view.  When the iPhone camera is pointed to the ground, the screen shows arrows leading the way to the closest bars.

The application also has user-generated, rating bars according to ‘menu,’ ‘dance,’ ‘clientele’ and ‘service,’. An integrated ‘Le taxi’ system provides phone numbers for taxi services to encourage adults to use alternate transportation at the end of the evening.

The 3D augmented reality version of Le Bar Guide can be used on iPhone 3GS handsets, while a 2D version is available for iPhone 3G and iTouch users.
