The Brewster Fish House

Just along Route 6A in Brewster is a small inviting restaurant serving fresh seafood with a smile. We sampled the perfectly cooked Grilled Native Lobster over jasmine rice with long beans, diced papaya, sliced hearts of palm, and some cucumber in a delicate coconut curry sauce ($36) and Sauteed Day Boat Scallops with crisp waffled potato gaufrettes, asparagus, pancetta, chive Bearnaise, pea shoots ($27). Both are worth the drive. Wine is quite reasonable, too. The '09 Sauvignon Blanc, Reserve, Brancott from New Zealand is only $36. - bonnie Brewster Fish House 2208 Main Street Brewster, MA 02631 508.896.7867 www.brewsterfish.com

Fin: A Seafood Experience, Atlantic City

FIN at the Tropicana Casino & Resort is the only seafood restaurant in Atlantic City and on the Boardwalk with outdoor oceanfront seating, weather permitting. Sadly, the evening I dined there a storm was brewing and I had to enjoy the ocean view through the window.  We commenced our meal with an avocado roll ($5) from the sushi bar, followed by a succulent Blue Crab & Maine Lobster Roll ($20) with huge chunks of seafood on a sweet bun that complemented the flavor of New-England style classic. Both washed down smoothly with Conundrum, Caymus, Rutherford California, 2008 ($45). Chef Demetrios Haronis signature Dancing Shrimp ($38) was next with onion-panko crusted wild [...]

Eat This, Not That! Unhealthy Salads

Trying to stay healthy? It can be quite hard when you're eating on the go. Heck, it can even be difficult when you're dining at at a restaurant. What's worse is the deception. I don't think that menus are purposefully hiding the fact that some of their healthier-looking options are actually worse for you, but it's happening. It's sad to say, but gone are the days of blindly believing a salad is the best option when ordering at casual restaurants or fast-food chains. Dave Zinczenko, Editor In Chief of Men’s Health magazine and author of Eat This, Not That! recently wrote about the “20 Salads Worse Than a Burger King [...]

Cuba Libre at Tropicana Casino and Resort

Cuba Libre, a themed restaurant designed to bring to mind Havana through both decor and food, had four locations around the country with more to come. I sampled their delicious Latin-flavored dishes at the Atlantic City location in what's called the quarter at the Tropicana Casino and Resort at lunch. Since they specialize in rum — offering over 75 varieties — how could we not their with their Primo Mojito Cuba Libre ($10), made with Flor de Cana Grand Reserva rum, hierba buena (a Cuban herb similar to mint), guarapo (fresh sugar cane juice), fresh lime juice, splash of soda? Refreshingly good. We began with at tasting of two piqueos [...]

Wolfgang Puck American Grille

From the moment we walked into Wolfgang Puck American Grille, we felt rushed by the service personal — sadly that continued throughout our meal.  Not pleasant at all. Rushed service aside, the best part of the meal were the appetizers. I'd recommend both that I sampled. The Sweet Jersey Corn Soup ($12) is a mouthful of freshness — smooth creamy corn drizzled with basil oil, topped with roasted butter-poached Maine lobster. The Roasted Beet and Goat Cheese Napoleon consisted of layers of beets and cheese topped with micro-greens, toasted hazelnuts, a citrus vinaigrette and drizzled with too little aged balsamic vinegar -- wish they drizzled more ($16)! Entrees weren't as [...]

L’Orcio, New Haven

With all the branzini I've eaten this year, I'm afraid this succulent fish might end up on Monterrey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch for being over fished. Other names for this mild, fairly firm white flesh — tastiest when cooked on the bone — include lavraki, loup de mer, Mediterranean sea bass, or branzino, to name a few that is. I enjoyed my most recent branzini in the outdoor garden at L'Orcio - where if you didn't know better you might think you were in Italy, not New Haven, CT. I've dined at L'orcio many times, loving best when the weather allows for alfresco dining. While sipping Cantina Zaccagnini Montepuciano d'Abruzzo [...]

Madame Tongs Redeux, Just for Apps

I couldn't refuse an invitation to sample Madame Tong's Redeux as it had a new owner, new chef, new menu and new decor and was supposed to be a new experience. The experience was new alright, but not something worth recommending that is until they get their act together — especially the service and the timing of the food delivery. Our  entrees were served  while we were still enjoying our appetizers. And, we were one of only two tables filled in the large -capacity place. I would — though — suggest going for one of their signature cocktails, specifically the watermelon martini ($15) and their BBQ rib appetizer ($15). Both [...]

Mi Cocina, Dallas, Texas

A serendipitous meeting on my flight to Dallas with Ray Washburn, one of the owners of Mi Cocina made me consider dining there while in town. That, and I was staying near their Highland Park location. I wasn't disappointed. Like typical Mexican restaurants, we nibbled their complimentary chips and dip and sipped on margaritas while scouring the menu. Their salsas for the chips are a bit above the typical. Flavorful. Piquant. We started with  their freshly made Guacamole "Mexicano" ($5.95/half order) and a platter of Nachos Locos with beans, beef and queso and more guacamole ($7.95). Yummers. The Tilapia Veracruz ($14.95) was cooked just right and served with a medley [...]

The Boathouse at Saugatuck Rowing Club

Living in Connecticut, I'm always looking for places on the water to dine when the weather's conducive. You'd think we'd have many many places to dine, but oddly there are few where you can actually sit outside by the water. One that I recommend is  The Boathouse at Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport, right on the Saugatuck River. I took my friend Carol to there for her birthday earlier this summer. We had dined inside at The Boathouse before, but heard they had a new chef and the restaurant was under new management. We weren't disappointed. Chef John Holzwarth's menu changes frequently as he uses what's local and in season.  [...]
