Splash Cafe & Artisan Bakery, San Luis Obispo, CA

Splash Cafe is another breakfast place to sample when in San Luis Obispo (SLO).  The original location is nearby — along the coast — in Pismo Beach (CA). Both Splash cafes are purportedly famous for their clam chowder, but only visiting the SLO place for breakfast, I didn't sample it. I did — though — indulge in their freshly baked bear claw filled with almond paste ($2.50) and a moist lemon-poppy seed muffin ($2.50) while waiting for my linguiça omelet ($4). The biggest bargain: the egg sandwich on 8-inch long whole-wheat bread ($2.95) topped with a sauteed piece of fresh salmon ($1.25). I was way too full to even think [...]

Big Sky Cafe Breakfast in San Luis Obispo (CA)

For me, there's no meal more relaxing than Sunday brunch. My family in San Luis Obispo agreed. On Sunday,  we walked into town to the Big Sky Cafe.  With seven of us -- we knew to get there early enough so we had no wait. It worked. I was looking forward to brunch as I had read that Big Sky focused on fresh and local ingredients. I wasn't disappointed. Once they poured steaming hot coffee, we were presented with a basket filled with jalapeno corn muffins and coffee cake replete with ginger and apple pieces. I restrained myself, having only one of each. I tried the day's special Spanish Chorizo [...]

Earthbound Farm Organic Luncheon

Earthbound Farm recently hosted a luncheon at their California organic farm stand for the media attending the  "Cooking for Solutions" conference at Monterey Bay Aquarium. This spot is home to a 30-acre organic farm, market and one of the country’s first certified organic kitchens. (The "Cooking for Solutions" conference held earlier this month addressed critical issues around ways to move sustainable and organic foods deeper into the culinary mainstream. Stay tuned for more info in additional TidBites.) After a tour of Earthbound Farm —  the nation’s leading grower of organic produce that was started in 1984 by Myra Goodman and her husband Drew — we were served a luscious array [...]

Best Fried Chicken…This Time San Antonio’s

This year gathering of food editors and chicken industry people took place in San Antonio (TX) in conjunction with the 48th National Chicken Cooking Contest. (The winner Brigitte Nguyen won $50,000 for her Chinese Chicken Bugers with Rainbow Sesame Slaw). Again we indulged in fried chicken -- not for a meal -- but for a mid-morning snack along with coconut cream pie!  (I keep telling you it's a tough job eating for a living ... but someone's gotta do it!)  The chicken was good, but -- in my humble opinion -- Willie Mae's Scotch House fried chicken that we sampled last year at our  "chicken" meeting in New Orleans was [...]

Taste of the Nation

I had the extraordinary experience of attending Taste of the Nation this month. The event was held at the breathtaking ballroom of the Georgia Aquarium and showcased many of the city's top culinary talents slinging their wares from their restaurant's booths, in a trade show, buffet-style format. A carnival atmosphere prevailed as we meandered through the aromas and colors of the various foodie samplings flying in ever direction. This is an event that is not to be missed if you have the opportunity. Since 1988, Taste of the Nation has brought together the most creative culinary minds from across the country; key figures of modern cuisine and national culinary celebrities [...]

Bedford Post: The Farmhouse Worth The Trip, Gluten-free, Too

With Richard Gere owning a restaurant, you figure people will come just hoping to get a glimpse of him. Once. What brings them back is the fabulous creative food of chef Brian Lewis. The Farmhouse is one of three establishments at the Bedford Post, which also includes The Barn (serving breakfast and lunch) and a Bakery. Our experience began on an off-note, as our waitress "V" opened and served warm Chateau Doisy Daene 2006 Barsac ($46). As you know, unchilled white wine taste worse than Ripple did. "I just grabbed the bottle from the refrigerator," V said, probably not thinking about the FIFO rule: first in, first out. "I'll chill [...]

Union League Cafe (New Haven) Always Wonderful

A secret for those who like to dine early (before 6) or late (after 9) and live in the New Haven area:  Twenty of the city's top restaurant offer a See, Sip and Savor fixed price three-course ($29) menu year round. Union League Cafe, offering contemporary French cooking, is one of them. Recently, I dined with a friend who wanted to meet before six, so we requested the pre-theater (as it's also called) menu. Union League Cafe offers a version of the menu that includes suggested wines for $49. We opted instead to enjoy a bottle of Cour Cheverny Francois Cazin 2007, a crisp wine, with a light mineral finish. [...]

Providence: Al Forno, Always a Treat

I've had so many bad business-meeting meals lately, that it was pure delight (as always) to dine at Al Forno in Providence while visiting Eric. We of course indulged in their signature grilled pizza, we chose the Margarita ($19.95). We followed that with Baked Pasta with Tomato, Cream and Five Cheeses ($19.95) and Wood-Roasted Herb Crusted Pork Tenderloin with white beans cooked with tomato and sage, and roasted broccoli rabe ($29.95). All delicious. Full as we were - we splurged on calories and ordered on the Grand Cookie Finale — six varieties of fresh baked still-warm cookies, warm beignets, candied orange peel and chocolate truffles ($19.95) and chocolate bread pudding with [...]

Michael’s Trattoria (Wallingford), Only If You’re in the Neighborhood

Again I was meeting someone from the Hartford area half-way... that culinary wasteland I've written about. I suggested to Connie that she find a place to meet, hoping she might discover a place that's worth the visit. Not being from the area either, Connie did her research resulting in two options. We ended up at Michael's Trattoria on Center Street. Sue, our waitress, was the overly chatty but fairly efficient type described the specials, not included in the reasonably priced, Northern Italian menu. Funny. Neither was the eggplant parmigiana that I ordered — at least it wasn't listed on Connie's menu!   Not sure why it's only on some menus, something [...]

New Haven’s Restaurant Week Just Commenced

It's back!  New Haven Restaurant week is a sure-fire way to make everyone happy: Restaurants are filled to capacity and diners get an economical chance to sample a taste of the city. Once announced, the popular restaurant were filled almost immediately. But there's always cancelations -- so do call ahead to see if you can get in. The celebration runs through April 24. The week-long epicurean celebration began yesterday. It  features about 25 of New Haven's restaurants, each serving prix fixe menus for lunch ($16.38 - the year New Haven was founded) and dinner ($29). Tax and gratuity not included. For a listing of the restaurants, their cuisines and the [...]

Cava Restaurant, Southington: If You’re in the Neighborhood

Here I was at another networking dinner, this time in Southington (CT) with dinner's topic — one of my favorite — "Making public relations work for you." After the over-adorned salmon I had at the last meeting at Fratelli's, I thought I'd try to order wisely. I asked for the Salmon Napolitana ($19), described as Cajun salmon oven roasted, spinach, fresh tomatoes, capers, onion straws, pesto, sherry wine sauce, couscous. I requested no pesto or sherry wine sauce and, in place of the couscous, asparagus (which another participant discovered to be the veggie of the day). The plate — as you can see — arrived almost empty: missing the spinach, [...]

Fratelli’s (Wallingford, CT): If You’re in the Neighborhood

For the Connecticut chapter of the National Speakers Association, we have monthly networking sessions over a meal. The meetings have a topic (this month's was a “Marketing Idea Swap”), are fun, and encourage camaraderie, but sadly the food is generally mediocre. Fratelli's was no different. I'm not saying the food is bad, it's just not very good. We started with lightly battered fried calamari that we shared while waiting for the group to gather. The squid was tender, not overcooked— but the batter could have used seasoning.  We also had forgettable bruschetta. My salmon was ungapatchka (a Yiddish word meaning ridiculously overdecorated or ornate.) It was moist, not overcooked, but [...]

Kevorkian Burger

Susan Levin, a staff dietitian for the Washington-based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, recently sent a letter to The West Michigan Whitecaps, a minor-league baseball team in Grand Rapids. This is not just an odd pen pal relationship; Ms. Levin is asking that the organization put a warning label on their new 4,800-calorie burger. Ms.Levin finds their creation to be a "dietary disaster" that increases the risk of cancer and heart disease.... The Whitecaps say they have no plans to put a label on the enormous new hamburger they're selling this season, noting it's just a publicity stunt, that has clearly worked.... Good grief... -bryan btw - The 4-pound, $20 [...]

Scoozzi New Haven: Sunday Jazz Brunch

I had read about the Sunday Jazz brunch at Scoozzi's, but somehow had never made it there until now.  As we walked into the sunlight dining room, I  could hear the soft music. At first I was a bit worried as we were seated just three feet away from the musicians, as catch-up was the order for the day and I wanted to be able to hear our conversation. We did enjoy listening to Tony Lombardozzi & Company's jazz while sipping Mionetto Prosecco ($32/bottle) and waiting for our food. We waited and waited about an hour in a not-packed restaurant. At least we had the seeded flatbread and roasted pepper [...]

Avanti (Meriden, CT), if You’re in the Neighborhood

My friend Beth and I are always looking for places halfway between our homes to grab a bite while we yak. We've realized that our halfway point is almost a culinary wasteland, but we keep looking. That's why I listened when my Fed Ex delivery woman Susan mentioned that she worked some nights at Avanti, an Italian place in Meriden and she recommended I try it. Since Beth and I were planning to get together, "Why not?" I thought. The food was fine, but service was excellent, having gone a night that Susan was serving! We particularly enjoyed the generous-sized baby spinach salad with goat cheese, roasted pear and lots [...]

Iron Chef Atlanta

Battle Rhubarb... Allez Cuisine!!! A recent fundraiser for the Atlanta Dogwood Festival took on an interesting dimension when it adopted the 'Iron Chef' format. Guests to the event were privy to a selection of silent auction items, passed appetizers (a pimento cheese 'slider' impressing most) and wine... all while taking in the competitive 'battle' between two local chefs. The secret ingredient was rhubarb (oddly, a rather Northeastern ingredient by my account). Shaun Doty represented his restaurant (aptly named Shaun's) while Chip Ulbrich showed what South City Kitchen was all about. The pair produced a dinner for the judges; Chip offering an entree of seared pork belly atop a sweet potato, [...]

New Haven: From “The Under-400-Mile Escape”

As a current New Haven area resident, I couldn't resist telling you about the article New York Magazine published on March 29, 2009, written by Adam Graham that mentioned how New Haven (CT) is for foodies! This is one of seven "cheap, exciting, nearby spring trips. For those times when Tahiti really is just a dream." Just click here to read about the six other mentions in "The Under-400-Mile Escape" FOR FOODIES: New Haven, Connecticut 95 Minutes by Car The college town’s burgers and pizza are justifiably famous (just check out the customer logjams at Louis’ Lunch and Pepe’s Pizza). Less known are its bounty of locavore restaurants, which have [...]

STEEL Restaurant – Friday 13th Menu

It's a new economy and restaurants are doing everything they can to continue and attract customers. 'Set menus' are reappearing as a means to more food for less money, as diners look to stretch their dollars at the dinner table. On this note, I recently took the opportunity to try a special occasion menu at a talked about Atlanta Japanese restaurant I'd yet to sample.  STEEL is engaging at first glance, with a zen garden-like atmosphere that includes an extravagant fountain, forming a literal rain curtain, wrapping around the bar and lounge area. My friend Sous had informed me about the dinner, but I had completely overlooked the fact that [...]

NEO Restaurant – Uncorked

NEO is one of the most upscale steps yet in the developing Atlanta dining scene. The contemporary Italian restaurant at The Mansion on Peachtree is a delectable addition to the city, as well as a welcome throwback to a true fine dining experience; something that is sometimes lost in this new age of the 'gastropub'. Being that it is a 'hotel restaurant', NEO offers breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. The menu selection spans the many hours of the day; from prosciutto eggs benedict in the morning, to a mouth watering ossobucco with risotto Milanese at dinner. NEO offers elegantly chosen and prepared cuisine throughout the day. Though already head and [...]

Toro: Fusion Japanese & Chinese (Newtown, CT)

I couldn't miss it. My cousin Barbara was showing some of her artwork in Newtown (CT). The show was entitled a "zen garden -- a minimal gathering of garden ceramics." Diane and I decided to head there at the end of the day so that we'd have time to grab a bite afterward with Barbara. We asked her to pick the place. Since that area of the state isn't know for it's food, expectations were quite low. I was genuinely surprised not only for the deliciousness of the meal, but for the attractive presentation as well. Instead of being plopped on a plate as in many Chinese restaurants, Toro's crispy duck [...]
