General Mills just announced their plans to reduce the sodium in their foods across multiple product categories by 20 percent by 2015, according to Greg Zimprich, Director of Brand Public Relations.GMLogo

General Mills is a global manufacturer and marketer of consumer food products whose brands include Pillsbury, Gold Medal, Yoplait, Bisquick, Hamburger Helper, Green Giant, Betty Crocker and Cascadian Farms. Earlier this year they announced a plan to reduce the sugar in their cereals advertised to children.

General Mills joins other major food companies – Con Agra, Campbell Soup Company, Kraft and Sara Lee — who are also reducing the sodium in their processed foods. I’m betting more companies will make plans to do the same.

As you may know, health experts generally agree Americans eat too much salt with most of it coming from processed food. Excess sodium is dangerous because it can contribute to high blood pressure, which can lead to stroke, kidney disease, heart disease or heart failure.

Personally, I’m loving this trend of these major food conglomerates moving in the reduced-sodium direction.

Way to go General Mills!
