Los Molcajates Mexican Restaurant & Bar, McMinnville, OR

Sitting outside on 3rd Street in McMinnville, in the Willamette (OR) Valley, I sipped a not-sickly-sweet huge margarita ($5.50) that the restaurant called "small" with their freshly made warm chips and a piquant sauce. I had planned to order lunch, but instead ordered a side of their freshly made guacamole ($3.50). That ended up being more than enough food for a nibble. We came back one evening for a dinner that didn't break the bank starting again with their delicious margies. David's Chinese Restaurant is a hole in the wall, mom and pop restaurant, worth the visit. You'll get freshly made, really inexpensive and plentiful food, not smothered in unrecognizable sauce! The woman owner who serves, wants you fed and happy. One of my group didn't want the hot and sour soup - but she insisted, and brought it out anyway. She's a bit hard to understand with her thick Chinese accent, but she means well. She had a difficult time believing I really wanted something spicy resulting in my dish being tasty but screaming for spice. She obliged by bringing me hot chili peppers to mix in. Kyllo’s Seafood & Grill, Lincoln City, OR

At about 3 pm, we were almost to the coast of Oregon looking on line for someplace to eat. Kyllo's Seafood & Grill seemed to have the best online rankings we could find via our iPhones when a couple miles from the coast. We booked it. The location on the deck overlooking the Pacific ocean and beach was beautiful. We quickly ordered a few things to curb our hunger while we looked over the menu.  The creamy fresh clam chowder ($4 a cup) was one of the best things that meal. Cheese is the star on the menu at Caseus (pronounced KAY-see-us) fromageria and bistro. I met some friends there recently for dinner on "extreme spice night" and opted for the tear-evoking, searingly hot, ceviche of local scallops and red royal shrimp — made spicy from marinating the seafood and poblano sheep milk cheese in both ghost and habanero chili peppers ($21). Le Pigeon, Portland

Knowing that Le Pigeon's Gabriel Rucker had won his second James Beard Award, I decided to sample his food when visiting Portand (OR) recently. In 2011, Rucker won the prize for Rising Star Chef of the Year. This year, he took home the prize for Best Chef Northwest. On the south side of highway 27 along the Napeague strip, between Amagansett and Montauk, Long Island  is a roadside shack amid the sand dunes with a huge "LUNCH" sign. Be sure to stop. We stopped into Community Table in McMinnville for breakfast one morning. I had learned that owner Scott Cunningham offers fresh local ingredients so he can supporting area growers, farmers and artisans that chef Jesse Kincheloe turns into housemade offerings. Palmeira Brasil Re-Opens

After shopping downtown, a friend and I decided to pop into Palmeira Brasil on Orange Street for a cocktail and a snack. The restaurant opened  last year, closed within the year and re-opened a few months ago under the same name with new owners. The décor is a cool white with green accents and colorful wall murals. The bustling new eatery Sotto Sopra occupied the space on Main Street in Amagansett, formerly held Exile. I was invited there recently to sample their cuisine of Italian specialties. Since the restaurant is from some of the people behind Bobby Van’s Steakhouse, you'll also find steak on the menu.
