Palmeira Brasil Re-Opens

After shopping downtown, a friend and I decided to pop into Palmeira Brasil on Orange Street for a cocktail and a snack. The restaurant opened  last year, closed within the year and re-opened a few months ago under the same name with new owners. The décor is a cool white with green accents and colorful wall murals. A separate room for private functions is available. As a complimentary happy hour appetizer, Palmeira offered spicy Brazilian wings with just the right amount of zing without being too spicy.  With that sipped  “The Salty Poodle” ($10), a pretty pink concoction of Lunazul Reposado Tequila, Velvet Falerum, triple sec, crème de cassis, fresh [...]

Madden’s Gastropub Now Open, New Haven

The former Humphrey’s location has gone through several incarnations since the original one closed many years ago. With the opening of Madden’s Gastropub, it may be a long-term winner. In a city that offers every type of cuisine possible, Madden’s offers good American fare – some in the classic sense, some with a creative twist.  The menu includes a variety of soups, salads, appetizers, sandwiches and entrees. I opted for the Pastrami Bomb, described as a “generous portion of pastrami, Swiss, sautéed peppers, onions, mushroom with spicy mustard" ($10). The sandwich was served with perfectly seasoned fries and tasty coleslaw. They weren’t kidding on the “generous portion of pastrami”!  The [...]

Stone Hearth in Westville

I joined a friend for a bite to eat at Stone Hearth Restaurant in Westville,  a new venture from the folks that own Delaney’s Bar & Grille, another Westville staple. Our friendly waitress poured me a glass of Brunn Gruner Veltliner, one of their featured wines. We ordered the bottle, instead of  the glass ($7). On the table was complimentary bread,  a house made focaccia with whole roasted garlic, topped with sea salt, and served with oil and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. The menu includes salads, personal pizzas and a kids menu. There is something for everyone, making the restaurant a nice choice for those dining with a group [...]

ordinary…far from it!

Caseus-owner Jason Sobocinski is also one of the owners of ordinary, in the former Richter’s spot on Chapel Street. Jason’s one of this community’s favorite sons — he could have opened up a McDonald’s franchise, and people would have applauded. Luckily he didn’t. He teamed up a couple of other nice guys and opened ordinary. So, here's the quick and dirt …not because it doesn’t deserve more…but because the place itself is simple and direct but yet far from… ordinary. Think colonial, dark wood, beef and meat pies. Same layout as Richters – bar in front and seating in back — but woodwork has been completely cleaned and re-finished with [...]

Madden’s Gastropub to Open, New Haven

Madden’s Gastropub is opening soon at 175 Humphrey Street.  A location that has seen many bar/restaurant incarnations come and go in the past several years, it will always be known to long standing locals as Humphrey’s  - the original.  Back in its heyday of the 80’s and 90’s – it was THE place to gather for burgers, beers and fun. Norbert Ponte, owner of Madi & Mia’s sandwich shop on Orange Street, will be opening the location as Madden’s Gastropub featuring American food. They have done extensive renovation work to both the front and back areas room – as well as adding a new awning out front. They have a [...]

briq Restaurant, New Haven

The heavy doors of the former bespoke — and short term Gilt — have re-opened as briq, located at 266 College Street. Under the direction of Executive Chef Mike Hazen, formerly with Barcelona, and whom I like to refer to as “the man who showed me how to properly chop vegetables,” is in the kitchen creating delicious, reasonably priced, “global tapas.” briq offers a full bar, with a unique cocktail menu, and is staffed with some familiar faced, highly-skilled bartenders – which perhaps serves as rumor confirmation that a certain mixology impresario, from a certain popular street-numbered lounge, is involved at briq. There hasn't been a grand opening yet as [...]

ROIA comes to New Haven:Bringing Sexy Back..1920’s Style

Bringing sexy back to New Haven, 1920’s style is ROIA Restaurant & Cafe…located on College St. next door to the Shubert (former Hot Tomato’s). I heard rumors that the well-known grand staircase was being removed and had concerns that all the gorgeous features that make the building breathtaking would be destroyed. I am happy to report that nothing could be farther from the truth! The new owners have restored the building to its original glory…. taking time to peel layers of wall covering and floor tile to reveal the original white oak walls and mosaic tile flooring.  Structurally, many other elements have changed for the better…no need to go to [...]

Judies European Bakery Closed

Judies European Bakery at 63 Grove Street, abruptly closed in late December. They ended their distribution to area grocery stores as well. Citing “the continued downturn of the economy,” the closing came as quite a surprise to customers who have enjoyed Judies' soups, sandwiches and breads for the last 15 years. Rumors are that they may re-open elsewhere under a different name, but nothing has been confirmed. Submitted by special Correspondent Robbin Seipold

Marrakesh – A secret restaurant gem

Listed in a Zagat article as a “Hidden Restaurant” — a place that you may walk right by it — we decided to try Marrakesh (517 South Leithgow St in Philadelphia).  When the driver pulled up at the end of the block, we all looked down the narrow street like a scene out of Harry Potter.  We could see a light and an awning and walked towards it. At Marrakesh it is customary to knock or ring the doorbell instead of walking right in -- it's like being welcomed into a home.  Oh well, we’ll remember that for the next time. The photos of Mick Jagger, Cher, Elton John and [...]

Yolande’s Bistro & Creperie to Open This Month, New Haven

I was invited to a special sneak peek tasting of Yolande’s Bistro & Creperie, the new French bistro that will open on Orange St., in the spot formerly occupied by Central Steakhouse. Owner Yolande Lacan, who jokingly refers to her life growing up as, "“kind of like Eloise at the Plaza," lived at hotels and inns throughout the East Coast operated by her family. We enjoyed a cup of French onion soup, with bubbling cheese on top of a thick slice of bread, while we watched Stephanie — her cook — create crepes at a communal table adjacent to the kitchen. We sampled savory crepes, made with naturally gluten free buckwheat [...]
