“They’re flying out of here faster than I can keep the display filled,” explained Alicia Dallai, owner of The French Door — my favorite gift shop in Hamden (CT) — when she told me about Switchflops.

“Wish I had thought of the idea.” Alicia was referring to her display of black flip-flops with VelcroTB_Switchflops.jpg straps to that allow you to swap straps and transform your outfit in a matter of seconds.

The idea is one of those slap-my-head-why-didn’t-I -think-of-it ones, thought of by a young entrepreneur Lindsay Phillips — now 23 years old — who perfected Switchflops by the time she graduated from college in 2007. The shoes are available in three styles ($32 to $47) and over 50 straps ($10 each). So instead of needing many different shoes to match your outfits, you just need a variety of easy-to-store Velcro straps.

For someone like me who travels all the time and takes basic black shoes to go with everything, this opens up stylish opportunities.

Available at switchflops.com and at select boutiques, such at The French Door, 2456 Whitney Avenue, Hamden 203.281.9000.
