Olive Oil Receives USDA Quality Monitoring Product Verification

Olive Oil Receives USDA Quality Monitoring Product Verification. All that glistens may not be pure gold in the bottle of extra virgin olive oil you purchase at the supermarket. In fact, earlier this month The Journal of Food Science reported that the top seven adulturated food foods sold in the U.S. are olive oil, milk, honey, saffron, orange juice, coffee and apple juice. In the case of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) this could mean that the oil you buy is not actually "extra virgin" or is even rancid by the time it reaches the shelves. The good news for olive oil consumers is that the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Services (AMS) recently [...]

Bodegas Farina 70th Anniversary Luncheon

Executive Chef Jesus Nunez at GastroArte (141 west 69th, New York City) created such an exquisite luncheon to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Bodegas Farina that I've made a mental note to return to the upper west side for dinner. At the luncheon, we first mingled with Manuel Farina and Manuel Farina, Jr — two generations of wine makers — while sampling two of their wines from the Castilla y Leon region: Bodegas Farina Peromato 2011 ($8-10) and Bodegas Farina Gran Peromato 2010 (~$12), the former a 100% Tempranillo, the latter a Tempranillo-Garnacha blend; both medium bodied with some fruit flavors, and such bargains to serve with meats and cheese. Virginia Tourism Event in the Big Apple

Earlier this month at a private reception hosted in Trump Tower atrium, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia Bob McDonnell and Donald Trump touted Virginia wines and food and promoted the film industries and tourism. Along with over 200 other guests, I sampled a number of Virginia foods and 11 of their award-winning wines from five different wineries. My favorites were both a Virginia Viognier: The dry and crisp 2008 Viognier from Michael Shap ($28) and the smooth-textured and slightly fruity 2010 Viognier Reserve from Barboursville ($22). Both are 100% Viognier. Or course, we sampled Virginia ham and peanuts - but the event's star was the tender roast beef sandwich [...]

Supermarket Sampler Goodbye….

Supermarket Sampler has said goodbye, ending a quarter-century of syndication. Our final goodbye's have been said over two week's time in newspaper across the nation, as well as online. Here's at taste those farewell columns... 04/01/2012 This week we depart from our usual format of reviewing three new products to think about the 4,000 products we've reviewed for this column in the past 25 years. We're saying, "Enough! It's time to push away from the table." Yes, we're ending Supermarket Sampler. Ironically, we have an unsuccessful new product to thank for our start. Carolyn: It was New Coke. Coke had changed its formulation and people were going crazy! I was [...]

A Taste of Thai Pad Thai Sauce 2. Birds Eye Steamfresh long grain brown rice and plain unadulterated vegetables sans sauce 3. Cabot's Private Stock, Cloth Cheddar...actually [...]

Apothic Red Wine

Apothic Red, with its blend of spicy Zinfandel, rich Syrah, bold Cabernet Sauvignon and creamy Merlot, has cherry fruit aromas with a hint of vanilla. - bonnie: I found that this full bodied red blend went well with ricotta-filled ravioli sauteed in butter topped with freshly grated parmigiana reggiano, grilled soy-ginger marinated skirt steak,  chile-spiked dark chocolates or on its own,  just enjoyed while nibbling  some roasted almonds nuts and fresh chevre  Follow @BonnieBOTB
