Bonnie: I liked Divine Chocolates, but until I nibbled one of their thin dark chocolate squares with peppermint fondant, none had been irresistible. As a regular reader of Bite of the Best, you may already be aware of my love of chocolate and mint.

We thought we’d share the details of these mints with you to turn you on to them for a holiday dessert table or to bring to a hostess. We like that Divine is a Fair Trade chocolate company co-owned by cocoa farmers who influence how the company is run, while sharing in their profits. That, and there’s only 45 calories per mint.

Bryan: Divine Chocolate is, as Martha would say, a “good thing.” The company is a leading Fair Trade advocate that is pioneering socially responsible food business. Fair Trade with the cocoa producers, based in Ghana, ensures that farmers have a secure source of income, which then aids in the development of schools, clean drinking water, mobile medical clinics and more. Divine gives ownership stakes in the company to the farmers, giving them a meaningful role in decisions about how Divine Chocolate is produced and sold.

The UK-based company launched a US company in 2007. Divine Chocolate Inc now provides Fair Trade chocolate to US consumers, with the farmers owning one-third of the US company! It’s a wonderful example of Fair Trade in action, and, beyond that, a wonderfully rich chocolate.

Divine makes a number of products worth your attention, from smooth milk chocolate to Milk Toffee Crunch bars, but it is the Dark Chocolate After Dinner Mints that are the subject of today’s heavenly chocolate experience. They are rich but light, lingering on the palate, but clean and refreshing. They are a fantastic ending to a savory meal or simply the best candy-dish item you can keep in your desk drawer.

Eric: At 45-calories a fondant mint, Divine Dark Chocolate After Dinner Mints are the tic tacs of the chocolate world – and worth every calorie. Although nearly indistinguishable in taste from Girl Scout thin mint cookies, the Divine mints aren’t peddled by a group of prepubescent, pigtailed girls; in fact, they’re available in your local supermarket. So why count down to the next Girl Scout delivery when you can indulge in your mint addiction anytime of the year, and with no guilty conscience?

The Bite of the Best team wishes you and yours a delicious Turkey Day!
