I mean, really? It’s just too funny not to post! So, apparently the first man on the moon is going to be commemorated in cheese!

July 20, 2009 marks 40 years since man first realized the dream of landing on the moon. Although the traditional 40th anniversary gift is ruby, Sarah Kauffman, the “Cheese Lady,” is commemorating the event in true “moon” form – with cheese! (What else?!)

Kaufmann will be carving a life-size astronaut out of 1,800 lbs of Wisconsin white cheddar.

Sarah began her carving on July 17 at a local Kroger supermarket in Saint Marys, Ohio. Customers were invited to stop by the store, watch the carving, and purchase their own “slice of the moon”, while also able to enjoy wine tastings during the viewing. The astronaut carving was eventually moved to (and completed at) the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio. This special “cheesy” tribute to America’s man on the moon was on display at the Space Museum alongside the world’s largest MoonPie (no, seriously!)

When American astronauts landed on the moon in 1969, it was a source of pride for Americans.. one which I can only imagine they never thought would be immortalized in cheese!
