A couple years ago a friend and I had a Calandria cocktail at Hotel Americano in Chelsea that we’ve never stopped talking about. It was the most delicious and spicy blend of Maestro Dobel Tequila, passion fruit juice, mango juice and ginger liqueur served in a chili-rimmed glass.

Having tried to reproduce it at home, my friend really wanted to recipe. Recently, we headed to the hotel to stop in at the bar to see whether we could obtain the recipe from the bartender. Sadly neither Joanne the bartender or Cyza the manager knew of the drink but were more than willing to try to re-create it with what they had in-house.  No mango or passion fruit juice, so we used orange.

We worked with Joanne to re-create something similar: we used 1-ounce jalapeño tequila, 1-ounce mezcal,  2 ounces orange juice, 1/2 ounce agave (sugar syrup) and 1/2 ounce ginger liqueur all served in a chili-salt rimmed glass. Our creation ($16) was good, but not the Calandria! Thanks to them for trying.

With that, we had some of their tasty fresh guacamole served with warm tortilla chips and salsas ($14).  I’d recommend a visit to the friendly hotel bar if you’re in the hood.
