The day was weather-perfect when my CT friend came to visit, so I wanted to share some out-door water haunts, ones that many non-natives don’t see.

Instead of the streets, we walked Highline from my home, existed about 26th Street and headed toward the water. “CLOSED for Maintenance” said the sign adhered to the big black frying pan.

I had called and looked online with every indication that the Frying Pan was open. It wasn’t.

Beep. Beep.

A message from my friend’s son, saying let’s meet at the Frying Pan tonight. We looked at each other and burst out laughing.

Looking for an alfresco place to crab a bite, we headed toward Hotel Americano. Although the roof wasn’t yet open, the terrace was. There I discovered the Calandria. I’d say this cocktail is the best mixed drink I’ve had in Manhattan this year. Yes, it’s that good. It’s a blend of Maestro Dobel Tequila, passion fruit juice, mango juice and ginger liqueur served in a chili-rimmed glass. I left a clean rim!

Their creamy mashed avocado (in need of seasoning) came topped with salsa, cilantro and sliced radishes, served with crispy tortilla chips ($15). But that tasted pretty good, after sampling their bland swordfish tacos topped with a slice of avocado, fresh crema and the same salsa and radishes on the guac.

Although the food is nothing to recommend, I’d go back for the Calandria anytime!
