Happy Thanksgiving From the Bite of the Best Team

Bonnie, Bryan & Eric: Instead of reviewing a product this week, we’re asking you to share… share what you’re thankful for this year in our comments section, and share with those less fortunate.

Many of us in the northeast are thankful for electricity and for still having our homes. Others aren’t so lucky as a result of Sandy, a storm that devastated our region last month. Many others have also been affected by economic hardships.

That's why — in addition to sharing your holiday thoughts here — we're asking you to please share food and other donations with those less fortunate by giving to food banks, food drives and any organization that help those in need.

To encourage you to do so, we’re offering a chance to win All-Clad Turkey Lifters: a set of two stainless steel lifters to use for moving large roasts or turkeys from the cooking vessel to the carving board, or to secure meat while carving; value $35.

To win: Post comment telling us which charity...

Eleven Madison Park’s Daniel Humm

I’m in love with Daniel Humm, chef/owner of Eleven Madison Park.  (Okay, so I do have a tendency for hyperbole!) I recently met and chatted with this tall, trim chef (he's a marathon runner), who lives in northern New Jersey with his wife and two young children. He is undoubtedly one of the most down to earth, unpretentious New York chefs I’ve ever met. My first meeting was earlier this week at a special "Best of the Alps" luncheon at Eleven Madison Park, and then last night at the Four Seasons Restaurant at the James Beard Foundation Silver Anniversary Gala, celebrating 25 years of outstanding chefs. For last night’s event, Daniel [...]

Describe your "last meal?" Crab cakes, made with amazing lump crab and my homemade potato salad, for sure. Then I'd toss in a few perfectly fried oysters. And ribs with a side of piping-hot fries! And since that's not rich enough, I'll have a ....

Which specific food product or gadget would you never give up? Why? Cayenne pepper. Being from New Orleans, people always think that our food is supposed to be hot. Now I like a little heat with all my dishes, but naturally our food isn’t hot, not until you add the spices or hot sauce. For me, when adding spice, I want to make sure I am enhancing the flavor, not obliterating it. Cayenne gives a gentle after-burn deep in your throat, a little kick, and adds layers of flavors rather than setting ...

Seventeenth Harvest in Square, Union Square

Last Thursday night I attended the Harvest in the Park - an event raising money for the ongoing beautification and maintenance efforts in Union Square Park put on by Union Square Partnership. With the nearly 1200 people who attended, they raised $330,000, up $30,000 from last year. Those funds have been used  for enhanced seating, plantings, the free Wi-Fi and the addition of bistro tables, chairs and umbrellas. Silly me,  I tried all the main signature dishes from the district's most popular restaurants, which used fresh produce from Union Square's own Greenmarket. And I washed all that down with wines from a dozen plus wineries. Beer from microbreweries were also [...]
