I met a friend for lunch recently at the Tick Tock Diner at the corner of 8th Avenue and 34th Street. I had selected the meeting place as it was between her subway station and Hudson Yards where I was attending a master class in volcanic wines from the Canary Islands at Spain’s Great Match, a Spanish Food and Wine event. Serendipitously, I ended up sitting with James Dillman, Casa Mono‘s sommelier who originally introduced me to the wines.

At the restaurant, my friend ordered their tuna avocado melt with Muenster cheese and tomato on grilled Texas toast. She mentioned that contained a bit too much mayo, especially with the soft avocado. Tasty otherwise. Her sandwich came with a hearty portion of thickly cut fries ($13.95).

I tried their Greek salad from that day’s specials ($14.95) with such an ample portion of grilled chicken that I couldn’t finish. The green salad contained bell peppers, scallions, feta cheese, Kalamata olives, stuffed grape leaves and lots of pita bread. I was happy that it had none of the menu-promised cucumber, as that veggie no longer likes me.

If you’re in the area and in the mood for diner comfort food, give it a try. And do sample the delicious volcanic Spanish wines!
