The Diner is an inexpensive place to grab a bite after wondering around the meatpacking district or a walking the High Line. It’s on the corner of Ninth Avenue and 14th Street.

I’ve sampled the chopped Mediterranean salad ($10.50) with added grilled chicken ($4) during one visit. The romaine comes tossed with chopped tomatoes cucumbers, carrots, feta, olives and — for an unusual addition — fennel, all in a light sherry vinaigrette. At first, they forgot my chicken, but finally served it after I was half done with the salad.

Another time, I met a friend for brunch, where we sipped our specially priced bloody Mary’s ($6) while awaiting our huevos rancheros ($11.95). The three sunny-side-up eggs were cooked still runny, topped with a flavorful roasted tomato salsa and served with home fries and a dollop each of guacamole and black beans.

Oddly the eggs were served over Cheddar cheese filled flour tortillas in lieu of the menu-stated corn tortillas. An unconscionable substitution without a mention to us, as the menu labeled the huevos rancheros “Gluten Free.” It was almost as if they ran out of corn tortillas and cut up uncooked quesadillas to use as the base. Odd and tasteless.

I wouldn’t recommend huevos rancheros but would suggest stopping by if it’s a nice day for just an alfresco nibble served with people watching.
