I’ve been living in Hamden for decades, but it was only last week I tripped over and decided to try Thai Awesome restaurant on Dixwell Avenue, right next to KFC. While I was waiting for my friend Claire to arrive, I watched a line up of people coming in for take out and was the only person in the restaurant. I wondered whether had made a mistake in selecting this place to meet.
We began with the summer rolls overflowing with fresh vegetables, shredded lettuce and shrimp wrapped in rice paper with a just spicy enough peanut sauce ($5.99). We followed that with bowls of Tom Yum Goong soup — the famous Thai hot and sour shrimp soup, spiced with chili, lemon grass, mushrooms, tomatoes and lime juice ($4.99). A perfect appetizer on an icy cold winter night, although I would have liked mine a tad spicier.
As we waited for our entrees, I noticed that the place was full, with almost every table filled, and more people coming.
We ordered the Pad See Eaw quick stir-fry of flat rice noodles
with broccoli, egg, mushrooms carrots & think soy sauce with scallops and seafood ($10.99). Next time, I’d select one of the other options, as the “seafood” included unrecognizable unusual looking pieces. The spectacular just spicy enough dish is their simmered yellow curry with coconut milk, onions, carrots, pineapple, tomatoes, bell peppers and baby corn and tofu ($9.99). Don’t miss this dish!
