Starbucks — the world’s largest coffee chain — announced yesterday that it would close 600 stores in the United States beginning this year, according to the New York Times. It will layoff more than 12,000 employees in the process, the most in its history.

The coffee chain, like all retailers, is struggling from all the cavalcade of economic troubles, from imploding housing markets to rising gas prices, reports the New York Times.
