I ventured down to the Lower East Side to Sauce for dinner one evening as I was heading to a movie preview of “The Theory of Everything,” followed by a Q&A with Academy Award winning director James Marsh. Don’t miss that part life/part love story of Stephen Hawking, the amazingly smart astrophysicist. That performance by Eddie Redmayne should earn him award nominations. Yes, that good.

Sauce — the newest restaurant from Chef Frank Prisinzano —is a blend of Northern and Southern Italian cooking where the thing to order is something with (drum roll please), sauce.

Before our sauce-laden entree, we shared an unusual crisp escarole salad ($10.95) with sliced Fuji apples, shredded ricotta salata, pine nuts and a few bright green, meaty Castelvetrano
olives.

Next, “The Plank” – the house specialty ($9.95 per person, two people minimum), finished tableside. The waiter pours soft polenta onto a slab of wood,  spreads it from one end to the other, then pours bolognese grass-fed beef sauce on top, drizzles it with EVOO and sprinkles it with lots of cheese. Stick-to-your-ribs comfort food.

We added in an order of their meatballs ($7.95 for four) served on pugliese bread in more sauce.

I would recommend a visit when you’re in the area!
