It was my first time at the newly opened Rouge Tomate in Chelsea, after having frequented the now-closed uptown place that also served seasonally inspired cuisine.

As a starter for brunch, my favorite is a bloody Mary, the spicier the better. Rouge Tomate offers two boozy brunch tomato-based options; I chose the poblano chili bloody Mary ($14) that was good although I would have preferred it with more of the spice pepper trio.

The food at Rouge Tomato is as tasty if not even better than the original restaurant. Wanting to sample the chilled beet soup, one of us ordered and three of us put our spoons in the bright bowl of burgundy velvet with pieces of snap peas and croutons, dotted with goat cheese. The waitress said the soup contained only beets, garlic and olive oil ($12). Try it.

I asked for the eggs on my root vegetable hash to be poached, my friend over lightly, each perfectly cooked to top the melange of potatoes and veggies, accompanied by a braised duck leg with the thigh still attached. Finger licken’ good ($26). Recommendable. So is the salmon tartine ($18) with Swiss chard, lemon sabayon and poached eggs.

Shared a birthday “chocolate” dessert of a rich mousse topped with cara cara oranges, coconut sorbet and a chocolate nib crumble ($12)
