After seeing the Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs exhibit at MoMA one frigid weekend recently, I open-tabled a res at Robert Restaurant on Columbus Circle just 15 minutes after we turned in our audio. Robert is located on the ninth floor of The Museum of Arts and Design, with an artsy interior and spectacular views of Central Park West and the surrounding area.
The challah French toast came surrounded with fresh berries ($19) and with a side of Vermont maple syrup. My dish of crisply fried corn tortillas topped with black beans and runny sunny-side up eggs came bordered by a simple salad. Was it the menu-described ($22)? Not exactly. The black beans had none of the promised pork stew, but was it tasty and beautifully presented.
You go to Robert’s for a real NY experience not the food: That breathtaking view of the park with Central Park West and Broadway spiking off of it, creates a magnificent backdrop. So, expect good service and nicely presented, decent food, but nothing out of the ordinary. It’s 100 percent atmosphere.
I still suggest heading there there for a really relaxing brunch, especially on a sunny afternoon.
