I felt as if I stepped back in time as I entered Marchi’s in Murray Hill, a legendary Italian place offering only one menu with no selections. A good choice for this large group of about 10 of us, mainly out-of-towners, as no one had to make any decisions. The standard menu is $54.75/person excluding alcohol.
Our Ascheri Fontanelle Barbera D’alba 2009, Podere Di Rivalta, Piedmont, Italy worked well with the food.
The first course is a huge platter of fresh veggies (a head of celery, sliced honeydew melon, giant radishes, heads of fennel), a plate of sliced Genoa salami, and a refreshingly tasty Lorenzo salad of canned tuna, capers and chopped red cabbage, celery, parsley and green olives.
Next is a portion homemade lasagna with a decent flavor, yet with pasta sadly beyond limp. This was followed by a delectably crisp, deep-fried fish with cold beets and string beans.
The meat course included moist roasted chicken and slices of roasted veal, a platter freshly cooked mushrooms and a bowl of tossed salad. Oddly I had asked for dark meat chicken but by the time the waiter got to me, I was told that all that was left was white meat. Inappropriate when that’s the only entree.
Dessert consisted of a bowl oranges, pears and apples, oddly missing the menu described cheese. Pastries were tasty lemon fritters and a mound of crisp fragile deep fried pastry twists sprinkled with confectioners’ sugar. Also included is a demitasse.
