Lord’s is the second restaurant from chef Ed Szymanski and his partner, Patricia Howard, paying homage to British bistro food. The first is Dame; both have a limited ever-changing menu. We continued the never-ending celebration of my big birthday outside at this restaurant on La Guardia Place.

I chose their unusual snap pea martini to start; my dining partner their minty gin and tonic. They combine Beefeater gin, blonde Lillet, Chartreuse and pureed snap pea leaves, then garnish the green-tinged martini with snap pea oil.

Don’t miss their Scotch egg, the quintessential British snack. They wrap the egg with curried ground lamb, roll it in breadcrumbs, and then deep fry it, careful not to overcook it so the yolk remains bright and runny.

We shared the plump cubes of hay-smoked steelhead trout next. It came topped with celeriac mousse and paper-thin coins of celery root in a puddle of broth and dill.

We chose the sirloin steak cooked medium rare with “proper English (amazing) chips” and green peppercorns. Lord’s cooks the thick-cut chips (aka French fries) three separate times: They are steamed first, then fried at a low temperature and fried again in beef fat to order. The result is crunchy thick-cut fries that are addictive.

We ended with the sundae-like Knickerbocker Glory ($15) with strawberries and hibiscus and the candle-topped cherry chou bun filled with chocolate creme ($14).

I recommend a special visit downtown to dine at Lord’s.
