La Stanza is located in Murray Hill, just above its sister restaurant, House of Lasagna, on the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 39th Street. You’ll rub your eyes to be sure you’re seeing the offered $18 price tag on the 3-course prix fixe meal.

Nothing spectacular, but decent food in a homey, relatively quiet setting. Great place to catch up with friends. Nothing pretentious. Our version of that three-course meal, less than some drinks in Manhattan, started with a simple mesclun salad with the house-made balsamic vinaigrette. We selected an Argentinian (Mendoza) Cascada Peak Malbec, which was light and drinkable for $32.

One entree consisted of decent-sized, and not overcooked, pan-seared Maine salmon served with spinach. That was the low-cal option of the entrees. Our heartier order had two large pieces of chicken parmigiana with a serving of spaghetti, all in a homey tomato sauce. We shared the two, which made the perfect-sized entree for each of us. I’m glad we shared!

The tiramisú was a perfect light version, easy to down after the heavy chicken dish. You can’t go wrong for $18!
