Talking a long walk on a Sunday with a friend is my usual MO, but with the arctic cold wave that had hit – we opted for a leisurely brunch followed by a movie.

Located on the ground floor of W New York – Union Square where Todd English’s restaurant used to be, Irvington was the perfect place to stop for brunch before heading to see the amazing Judi Dench in Victoria and Abdul, the amazing story of Queen Victoria’s unlikely friendship with a young Indian clerk Abdul. A delightful movie.

We began with one of their well-balanced cocktails. My friend had the lemony French 75 with Tanqueray gin, fresh lemon juice & simple syrup topped with bubbly, Domaine Chandon brut ($16) and I had their bottled Moscow Mule ($16) made with Absolut vodka, fresh ginger juice, lime, carbonated & bottled in-house. The server arrived with a bottle and poured it into my copper mug. Delicious.

We shared the flavorful baked eggs atop tomato braised chickpeas, with a spicy beef and lamb sausage colored with red peppers (merguez) then topped with a few slices of avocado ($18). I’d highly recommend that dish. Not so the avocado toast topped with a poached egg, that was supposed to have smoked tomato jam & cilantro ($15), but that was missing and the avocado wasn’t as fresh or flavorful as it should have been. Skip that. Glad we had added a side of the perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper crispy french fries ($10). Seriously, perfection. I’d go back just for them.
