Earlier this week, I ate and drank my way through the New Haven Food & Wine Festival Grand Tasting that featured food from many of the city’s top restaurants and wine sampling provided by The Wine Thief.

Doing my duties, I stopped at every booth in the large tent  to sample each and every fabulous savoy item.  Those yummies included:

  • 116 Crown’s crostini with tallegio & vegetable spread from the restaurant’s new organic garden

  • Barcelona’s chorizo bocadillo with spicy cabbage; and pork loin bocadillo with manchego, pimento and pickles
  • Basta’s farfelle funghi
  • Caseus’ fabulous cheeses and fresh fruit
  • Geronimo’s bison-elk Salisbury steak
  • Ibiza’s delicate shrimp & bay scallop ceviche
  • Kitchen Zinc’s cichetti of baby fresh mozzarella balls, olives, tomatoes and basil pesto
  • L’orcio handmade spinach and ricotta ravioli in a tomato basil sauce
  • Pacifico sweet corn arepa with duck ropa viega and pomegranate reduction
  • Thali peri peri shrimp and cauliflower Manchurian
  • Cask Republic’s BBQ braised short rib sliders
  • Union League Cafe’s chilled bourride
  • Zinc’s chilled green and red gazpacho with crab salad

When it came to dessert, I was bursting at the seams and didn’t have room for all the sweets. I did squeeze in Claire’s mini cupcakes, Union League’s double chocolate parfait and Caseus decadent chevre brownies.

This event happens every year during the New Haven Open at Yale, so be sure to mark your calendar for next year’s event. It’s an eating orgy with delicacies — both savory and sweet — from many of New Haven’s finest restaurants.
