Landing in San Diego on my way to see my grandkids and attend the Super Bowl, I met my cousins for a quick bite at Con Pane Rustic Breads in Liberty Station not far from the airport.

This shop offers handmade artisanal breads, decadent pastries and signature sandwiches. The breads get their complex flavor from levain (the French for leaven), a natural culture of wild yeast.  Had it been the end of my trip, I might have brought some home with me. Yes, that good.

I had to try their unusual  turkey cobb sandwich. Roast turkey breast, Applewood smoked bacon, fresh avocado slices, crumbled Italian blue cheese, house-roasted Roma tomatoes and romaine came sandwiched between thick half-slices of their artisan multi-grain bread.  I ordered only a half that was almost too large to finish ($7.5 for half)

Two cousins shared turkey sandwich (roasted turkey breast, Roma tomatoes and romaine) on Kalamata olive bread ($12.50 for a whole), the other had seasoned roast beef with Roma tomatoes, sliced red onions and romaine on the multi-grain ($7.5 for half).

My cousin couldn’t resist a couple of their pastries, bringing back utensils so everyone could share as a sweet tooth is in our genes. Both the seasonal berry brioche almond toast and a warm cinnamon roll ($5.95 each) were hard to resist.

Worth the trip.
