During the celebration of the Lunar New Year, I was invited to China Fun on the Upper East Side. Choosing from the enormous menu featuring standard American Chinese fare brought back memories of eating out as a kid. We discussed the options with our server, as we preferred not having dishes with deep-friend protein!
We started with the steamed soup dumplings, which I’d recommend. We had both the pork ($7.75) and pork & crabmeat ($8.75) crystal mini soup buns. With that we had cold sesame noodles with a spicy Chinese parley sauce ($7.25) topped with shredded cucumber. If you like spicy like I do, be sure to ask for extra chiles, as the dishes marked with a red chile pepper didn’t packed much heat.
China Fun adds a small amount of dried pork to this classic Ma Po Bean Curd mixture ($12.50), at least according to our server. When I make Ma Po Tofu, I use ground pork and prefer it that way with more meat, less bean curd.
Our chicken dish with mixed veggies (mainly green pepper, a few broccoli florets, some carrots, onions and snow peas) was in a fish sauce (“in sa chia” sauce, $15.95); our shrimp in garlic sauce also came with lots of green pepper, some red pepper, mushrooms and snow peas ($19.50).
