We stopped to have lunch at Caló Kitchen + Tequila restaurant before heading to Barnes & Noble for a book for my granddaughter.

My daughter-in-law, granddaughter and I nibbled on their shrimp ceviche ($17) and their warm, wonderful beans and salsa with chips while the adults sipped margies. I tried their Cadillac one made with milagro blanco and Grand Marnier, asking for their spicy twist ($15), while my d-i-l had the grilled pineapple chile one ($16). Both delicious.

When ordering from our well-trained waiter, Alex, I realized he knew his Mexican sauces. As a New Yorker, I was fascinated by the enchilada discussion. My d-i-l was hoping for Enchiladas Suizas, enchiladas with green salsa and cream sauce. Cato’s menu only had enchiladas with a choice of red, green or mole.

Alex to the rescue.

He suggested combining a Serrano sauce and some sour cream; he did warn her it was a bit spicier pepper than the traditional cream sauce. She was happy. And so was I with my chicken enchilada with their chocolate-forward mole sauce. I also tried a pork tamale with chile verde, cheese and salsa quemada (a roasted tomato and tomatillo salsa) with rice and beans. So good. I recommend.

We each chose two entrees and a side for $21. We had the choice of one, two or three menu items with our choice of salad, Mexican corn or rice and beans for  $17/ $21/ $25. A good deal.

My granddaughter enjoyed her child’s cheese quesadilla ($9).

I highly recommend a visit.
