I discovered the best huevos rancheros around town at the all-day Mexican restaurant and marketplace Cafe el Presidente on 24th Street in Chelsea.

The last eggs, tortilla, cheese, beans and salsa that I sampled were sadly neither satisfying or satiating. That dish at Cafe el Presidente is pure perfection. It begins with a tortilla made in-house topped with almost airy frijoles refritos (refried beans), a tomatillo salsa with just the right about of kick, two runny-yolk cage-free eggs with chihuahua and cotija cheese and fresh pico de gallo ($10.49). It’s not to be missed.

I first sampled Cafe el Presidente’s huevos rancheros at their press event last fall that I just stopped at and had a few bites. I realized how good it was after I left for an uptown meeting. I had to go back.

I did so recently as their guest, trying it again to confirm my thoughts, and sampling much more of Executive Chef Jason DeBriere’s menu made with organic, local and hormone & antibiotic free foods.

We started with two breakfast cocktails just added to the menu. The spicy bloody Mary ($10) and the Mimosa Mexicani cocktail (watermelon juice, tequila topped with Prosecco and a pinch of salt). Instead of a cocktail you can order freshly squeezed orange, grapefruit and pineapple juice.

Also recommended are the eggs tinga ($13.95), an unusual spiced braised free-range chicken on corn tortillas topped with runny eggs, avocado, Cotija cheese and cream; and their bowl of their fresh seasonal fruit ($9.95) with honey.

To get a taste of what’s offered at their panaderia (bakery) try the Canasta Panaderia ($11.95), a sampling of a roasted corn & poblano muffin, a jalapeño & Cotija buttermilk biscuit with chili honey, pretzel-like croissants with jam and  the empanadas filled with jam. None of them are worth the trip, but the huevos rancheros are.
