Boulud Sud is Chef Daniel Boulud’s Lincoln Square Mediterranean-inspired restaurant where I stopped by recently for lunch with a friend. The restaurant has a mid-century modern decor, with floor to ceiling windows, making it bright and light filled.
Do start with their taramasalata — a smoked cod roe dip — that’s whipped and elegant. Be sure to use their crisp house-made thinly sliced dill potato chips ($13) for dipping instead of the olive ciabatta or rosemary garlic bread offered on the table.
I’d suggest skipping the shrimp with garlic. These Rudy Red shrimp were a bit overcooked, but flavorful ($19). I would though suggest ordering the perfectly cooked grilled octopus, served over an arugula and orange salad on top of a Marcona almond puree with a splash of Jerez vinegar ($23). The salad was quite fresh yet screaming for a soupçon of seasonings.
The seared tender Mediterranean sea bass — first marinated with olive oil, coriander and black pepper — came served over fennel puree and a wild rice from Provence with confit onions, mission figs and toasted almonds all topped with fresh figs ($32) and microgreens.
For dessert if you’d like to sample a few different bite-size treats, try the Boulud Sud Mignardises — Mediterranean sweets. Those included small bites of walnut baklava, hazelnut torrone (milky soft cubes with hazelnut), chocolate panforte di Siena (chocolate chopped nut cookie), teeny pistachio Madelines and cubes of orange blossom Turkish delights ($16).
