Bella’s Cafe on Whalley Avenue in Westville is one of the brunch places where you don’t mind waiting for a table, as the food is that good. I’ve waited outside with friends many a Sunday, so I thought perhaps  I’d beat the crowd if I met a friend there for a Saturday brunch. Not exactly. Although not as long, we still had to wait. (They do not take reservations!)

We started with bellinis ($7) — I had the blood orange one (sans any blood orange flavor), my friend enjoyed the flavorful raspberry one. The blood orange bellini was this brunch’s only disappointment.

The chilaquiles were wonderful layers of tortillas soaked in a tomatillo salsa,  topped with two fried eggs, Mexican cheese, fresh avocado and drizzled with jauajillo oil. I requested grilled andouille instead of menu-offered marinated steak ($14.95).

The shrimp and grits — scrambled eggs, sliced chorizo sausage and shrimp over warm buttered grits with a huge home made biscuit (more like an Eastern scone than a Southern flaky biscuit, $14.95)

Next time you’re trying to decide where to have brunch, I suggest heading to Westville to Bella’s. It won’t disappoint.
