My friend was on a quest for the best octopus in the city; many articles mentioned Taverna Kyclades in the East Village as one of the best. She planned to stop by and buy a gift certificate for her themed “octopus” present for a friend. We decided to sit and sample their charcoal-grilled octopus ($24.95) before heading to dinner, enjoying a glass of Moschofilero, Mantinia, Greece ($10) with it.

She opted not to buy that certificate as the octopus was merely okay, nothing special.

The staff, though, was lovely, even serving both of us galaktoboureko (semolina custard baked in filo) gratis.
