Stopped in recently at the Taste of China on Chapel Street after seeing Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine — the powerful drama featuring Cate Blanchett with a performance that surely puts her in best actress Oscar contention for her portrayal of a woman on the edge.

You might know the recently opened restaurant from their sister one in Clinton.  The menu here is extensive. I found the use of one to three peppers to indicate how spicy the dishes a tool to help me get thru the menu, as I’m a spice gal, loving the heat.

For apps, I liked the two-pepper wontons ($10) consisting of five steamed pork-filled wontons, with a spicy sesame and peanut sauce, topped with scallions. And I highly recommend the one-pepper Dan Dan mein ($8) noodles in a flavored broth with sauteed greens topped with minced pork.

My only dislike was the three-pepper sliced beef in chili sauce. The beef, which was covered chopped peanuts, drizzled with sesame oil and topped with scallion ($11) was first was coated with dried hot chili peppers, making it almost too hot for me to enjoy.

Prepared table-side, the one-pepper sizzling shrimp & scallops in white garlic sauce ($25) with broccoli, black mushrooms, sliced bamboo shoots and pickled chili peppers was also tasty all in a white garlic sauce.

Their ma po tofu ($18) consisted of soft creamy cubes of tofu with leeks, chili peppers and minced pork. This three-pepper dish was no where near hot as the sliced beef.

I’d be game to go back and try more dishes. I suggest giving it a try.
