The Smile is a dimly lit, wood-ceilinged, below ground restaurant in a landmark 1830 townhouse on Bond Street. A place I heard offered decent lunch fare.

After I had ordered a glass of wine from the menu the waitress returned to hand me a pricier wine menu (~$3 a glass more), saying they no longer offered what was listed on the menu. Not an auspicious beginning.

Our waitress must have been new, as she was clueless when I asked about the freekah salad ($11). She strained to to read my menu as she ventured to describe it. The freekah — a high-fiber wheat-based grain — salad came combined with some minced veggies (zucchini and asparagus), a roasted red pepper purée and sliced of grilled manouri (cheese). I’d recommend this interesting and quite tasty dish.

The small kale salad contained 4 (we counted) oddly picked cherry halves all tossed in a light lemon dressing. At least the pecorino cheese gave the salad a bit of substance. Ridiculously small salad for $12. I’d recommend only if they opted to provide a decent-sized serving.

I’d say Smile is okay to stop by if you’re in the neighborhood, but by no meals go out of the way to eat there, especially if you’re hungry.
