Ralph Pucci: The Art of the Mannequin is the first museum exhibition to explore the work of the renowned New York-based designer who collaborated with luminaries such as Diane von Furstenberg, Patrick Naggar, Andrée Putman, Kenny Scharf, Anna Sui, Isabel and Ruben Toledo and Christy Turlington. This exhibit — with 30 of his most important mannequins, as well as an in-gallery recreation of his sculpture studio — is at The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) through October 25, 2015.
Earlier this month I was fortunate to have a tour of the exhibit by Ralph Pucci along with curator Barbara Gifford, as arranged by the Manhattan Women’s Club. After seeing this exhibit, you’ll never look at a mannequin the same way again.
After our special visit, we had lunch at Robert restaurant on the ninth floor of the museum. (You needn’t buy a ticket to the museum to dine at the restaurant.) Sadly, the food isn’t as spectacular as the breathtaking views of Central Park. I had a Caesar salad ($15) nicely adorned with anchovies, but lacking flavor. I then split their salmon burger topped with grilled red onions, avocado and some aioli served with fries and a nicely dressed mixed green salad ($22). We had requested the salmon medium-rare; it wasovercooked.
So don’t have high expectations for the food at Robert, but do for the restaurant’s service, the amazing MAD museum and their wonderful gift shop.
