I never noticed Pizza Vinoteca just off Union Square until invited to meet the publicist there, even though I had walked past it many times. Sadly there’s been scaffolding in front of the restaurant’s door on 15th Street since it opened earlier this year.
It’s fresh take on a neighborhood pizza joint is worth looking for. Although the address is Union Square West (the 19th century headquarters for Tiffany & Company flagship store), enter on 15th Street and head upstairs for the table-service dining. It takes a minute or two to familiarize yourself with the digital ordering system, but once you do, it’s fun!
Don’t miss either the asparagus wrapped in prosciutto and grilled or — my favorite — the salad of grilled shrimp with orange supremes, spinach and fennel ($8).
In addition to appetizers and salads, they obviously offer pizza, an oblong grilled foot-long (5-inches wide) whole wheat one. I liked the simple house version with tomato, fontina, mozzarella with fresh basil ($9) and the Jowlciale, spicy chili pesto, fontina, pistachios and honey ($14) one. Skip the potato pizza, unless they’ve figured out a way to finish cooking the spuds. Our slices were undercooked.
After you select your food, choose one of the three dozen wines, priced under $10 a glass. What I loved is the airtight Enomatic system, keeping each wine both fresh and at optimum temperature.
Pizza Vinoteca is worth the visit.
