Often when I’m invited to sample the food at a restaurant, I have carte blanche to order most anything on the menu. That wasn’t so during my visit at the second outpost of Olma Caviar Boutique & Lounge. The first location is at The Plaza Food Hall at the Plaza Hotel.
When I arrived at the Upper West Side location, Edward Eliachov the owner told me he had ordered for us and selected the bubbly. The latter was a new one not yet listed on their menu — the Charles de Monrency reserve brut.
He had ordered us their signature caviar platter with Olma’s eight caviar selections, each served on a blini ($55). That included Beluga, Osetra Karat, Siberian Aurora, White Sturgeon, Hackleback, Paddlefish and Salmon caviars. It’s certainly a wonderful way to discern which of their caviars you like before buying some. They are available from a 0.5 ounce small glass jar up to 17.6 ounce caviar metal tins. I appreciated the different taste, texture and salinity of each.
I smiled when Edward said we’d also be getting “salmon lox sandwich ($9)/” I learned that the sandwich came with arugula, sliced tomatoes and cream cheese on — not a bagel, but — a French baguette. To my surprise, it was quite good that way. I won’t be a convert but did enjoyed each bite.
If you like caviar, I’d suggest a visit to Olmas.
