Last month, Jeff Fyfe, Senior Winemaker for The Crossings located in the Awatere Valley, New Zealand invited me to join him for lunch and a wine tasting at Natsumi, serving modern Japanese cuisine.
We were there more to taste his wines than the food, but we did eat. He chose some appetizers to highlight a couple vintages of his Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and his surprisingly — at least to me— delicious Pinot Noir.
We sipped The Crossing 2015 Sauvignon Blanc while nibbling both the tender king crab dumplings ($9) and the rock tempura teeny shrimp coated in a spicy sauce ($12.50). Both worked well with the wine.
We then opened the Pinot Noir and found that both dishes also worked well as did our main courses. Those included a grilled chicken teriyaki lunch box that came with seafood tempura, dumpling, a house salad and a California roll ($15.50); a spicy tuna roll (15.50); and the maki combo ($15.75) with a choice of three rolls with shrimp.
I’d recommend both the restaurant and the wines.
