After walking through downtown Brooklyn in and out of some shops, we ended up at Lobo on Court Street, a place my friend wanted to return to for the Tex-Mex comfort foods that included fried pickles, fried okra and chicken fried steak plus typical Mexican fare.
Nice vibe, I thought when walking into this two-floor cantina. (There’s also a back garden, weather permitting). Lobo’s is a fun, neighborhood place to come for a beer and some south-of-the-border cheap grub.
My dining partner, who wanted white wine, laughed at the offerings: Chardonnay ($7/29) or “seasonal” ($8/33). We opted for the seasonal, as cheap white is always better than cheap red! It was a Chilean Casillero del Diablo Pinot Grigio.
I was in a nacho mood. I had been dreaming about the ones I couldn’t finish — the stacked high, full of real cheese and over-loaded with shredded meats and jalapeno peppers — at Virgil’s. Not because they served too much or I wasn’t hungry, but because as Virgil’s guest I had more I needed to eat to write my review.
Lobo’s country nachos ($12) came with housemade chips. A good start. They also had pulled pork (sadly not the tender 6-hour smoked meats at Virgils) over white beans, with saucy cheese (I prefer shredded real stuff), a few tomato pieces and lots of jalapenos. These nachos where plentiful enough to satiate me, but not my dreams.
I wouldn’t go out of my way to return unless I was in that hood. I’d stop in, as I did like the fun family-friendly atmosphere.
