I was invited to County, to sample the new neighborhood eatery’s fare menu created by Executive Chef Jan Feshan (formerly of ABC Kitchen, NYC).
That night, a group of 19 women, who had never met before their trip to New York City, occupied the table next to us.
We began with their silky housemade ricotta cheese ($10) drizzled with honey, olive oil, fresh mint and chili peppers and served with grilled country bread. I do recommend.
While nibbling their the fennel salad ($14) that combines both braised and the freshly shaved bulb with Kalamata olives, goat cheese and chili peppers in a citrus vinaigrette, I watched as the small waitstaff graciously handled the large party.
As sprout lover, I was happy with their special of roasted Brussels sprouts, bacon and caramelized onion in a pickled onion vinaigrette ($8). I also highly recommend the roasted market veggies, which that night included corn, ($16) along with quinoa, soffrito, a crispy egg, house pickled carrots and other veggies.
The evening’s only disappointment was crispy rock shrimp special, served with a black pepper aioli ($14). I found them quite greasy, having been fried in oil that wasn’t hot enough.
For entrees we sampled the Skuna Bay Salmon ($25) — cooked perfectly, slightly rare — with zucchini salad, fennel, and golden balsamic vinaigrette. And we tried the pulled hearty pork tacos ($14) with salsa roja, guacamole and pickled red cabbage — a meal in itself.
On my way out, I had to ask what had brought these strangers together around a dinner table. Scrapbooking. And how did they find County? They tried to book at ABC Kitchen, but were told they couldn’t accommodate them.. and one of the group searched the neighborhood and found great comments about County. Smart women as they found a delightful neighborhood place to dine.
