I’d read about Clocktower, the new Stephen Starr restaurant with English chef Jason Atherton in the kitchen located inside the old Metropolitan Life Building just off Madison Square Park. It’s inside the New York Edition Hotel, a 273-room luxury hotel that also opened last year. I stopped in recently to meet a friend for breakfast. You walk up a winding staircase (yes, there’s of course elevators) to this luxurious, wood-lined multi-small-room elegant place to eat.

While waiting for my friend, I overheard the patrons at the table next door complaining. Her first objection was to lukewarm cappucino; next the same issue with oatmeal. I thought she was one of those people who just liked to complain.

My friend ordered the brioche French toast with smoked bacon and maple syrup ($19) and I the mushroom, goat cheese and spinach omelet ($17). Both arrived at room temperature on plates without a garnish to be seen. To say the food was mediocre is being kind.

I’m so glad I had decided to try it for breakfast first before spending a wad on a bad more costly lunch of dinner. My suggestion: only stop in to meet a friend for a drink in a quiet setting.
