What a find! I was meeting a friend for brunch before heading to the Met on one of the balmy winter days and found a wonderful Mexican taqueria between 80th and 81st Street on Second Avenue. We sat outside to enjoy the day.
We couldn’t resist their brunch-time offered bottomless cocktail ($15). Time limit to 1 hour. Our spicy bloody Marys were served in canning jars. Our first one was perfection, with extra horseradish added to their housemade tomato-mixture to spice it up. Fresh limes garnished our first drinks; jalapeños the second and third!
We liked sitting outside at Cascabel Taqueria enjoying the unseasonably warm weather. As the waiter passed by, we noticed the unconventional service of food placed directly on rectangular metal trays. That food, though, was very fresh and flavorful. I ordered my huevos revueltos en salsa verde ($9), with poached (instead of the menu offered scrambled) eggs along with housemade pico de gallo, a tomatillo sauce, queso frescho and a side of crumbled chorizo served with warm tortillas ($11). My dining companion asked for the chorizo benedict ($12) with poached eggs atop housemade griddled corn bread and chorizo with a chipotle hollandaise sauce that we asked for on the side.
Odd presentation for sure, but the food was so good that I would recommend a visit!
