I had been hearing buzz about Cafe Clover, including from a the food-professional I met sharing Uber from La Guardia. I had to try it this inviting cafe located on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Downing Street in the West Village. While waiting for my dining partner who was late, the man sitting at the table next to me offered me a taste of his baby carrot salad over cashew cashew cheese topped with carrot green pesto. Beautifully presented, but it screamed for a bit of seasoning.
Chef David Standridge, who uses locally sourced organic produce to create his healthful dishes, had a way too light seasoning hand on all the dishes. After doctoring the white asparagus soup ($13) heavily with salt and pepper, the flavor did come through. It was attractively garnished, yet nothing special.
We then shared the much touted quinoa tagliatelle with beet greens, lots of maitake mushrooms and sunflower seeds, dusted with parmesan ($18). An interesting dish with intermingling flavors that would have been extra special had the pasta not been way overcooked and gummy, sticking to itself.
The best ‚ which I’d highly recommend — was the “meaty” tasting beet and mushroom burger rolling in chia seeds ($12) on a sweet potato bun, topped with a sweet potato jam and served with a side of tahini. The flavors would even be better had the ordered farm cheddar not have been forgotten!
