We stopped by Bocca Restaurant & Bar in the Flatiron district recently to experience their friendly service of Roman-style cooking, with lots of tomato-sauce options.
We started with the fruity, full-bodied, jammy Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (Le Sughere Rocca di Frassinello, 2011, $52) and the Polpettine della nonna. That’s three large veal meatballs in tomato sauce topped with a little grated parmigiano ($13).
Keeping in the tomato-based Roman tradition, we had gnocchi al “telefono” ($18), house made potato dumplings and mozzarella, in tomato sauce topped with a fresh basil leaf. (No comparison to the light pillow-soft ricotta gnocchi at Union Square Cafe.)
Our final dish was the main one I’d recommend: their flavorful wide ribbon pasta tossed with tender tomato braised lamb shank and topped with fresh ricotta – Pappardelle al ragù di agnello ($19).
