Balthazar is a Soho restaurant that recalls the classic twentieth century French brasserie, the type that’s now difficult to find in Paris. I had a business breakfast there again recently.
We perused the menu laughing and sipping our coffee ($4.95) as we both were trying to decide between health and sugar. A chocolate croissant or sticky bun verses a bowl of oatmeal?
The steel-cut Irish oatmeal with a choice of bananas or raisins ($10) won out.
I’d highly recommend it, as it was the most moist, perfectly textured oatmeal I’ve ever eaten (homemade, aside). My friends bowl was topped with horizontally sliced bananas, mine accompanied on the side — as I had asked — by a bowl of plumped raisins, that were slow cooked with brandy, a little water and a little sugar to retail the sweetness. Perfection.
