I was looking for a place to grab a bite in Morningside Heights as I was attending a reading of Flee presented by New York Stage and Film at Barnard. That’s is how I ended up at Amigos a Mexican restaurant also offering their take on BBQ. I was their guest.

We started with the classic guacamole ($9) that their menu boasts was named the #4 best guacamole in the US by the Huffington Post. It was served with warm tortilla chips and fresh pico de gallo. With that we ordered — what else, but — margaritas. My dining partner had the traditional one; I asked for hot tamale without the mango. That sweet mango probably would have softened the tart edges of my drink that included Corralejo reposado tequila, fresh jalapeño, lime juice and a chili salt rim ($11). I did like the spiciness of it.

For apps, I’d recommend both that we sampled: the gooey good queso fundido (melted cheese, $9) with warm tortillas and the deep-fried potato flautas  with a bit of cheese ($9), served with a piquant tomatillo sauce and sour cream. If you order both, drizzle some of that tomatillo sauce on the melted cheese in a tortilla!

Although they serve three tacos with rice and beans as an order, I requested one of two different kinds, as I wanted to leave room for our entrees. Don’t miss either the fried Baja fish taco ($15) topped with a citrus slaw, chipotle cream and a red Cascabel salsa or the slow-cooked pork carnitas ($14) topped with two green sauces — a creamy tomatillo and an avocado salsa. If you stop by on a Monday, they offer unlimited tacos and sangria for $19.95.

I’d recommend both the entrees we tried. Although the grilled Yucatan salmon ($18) was a tad over cooked, it was still flavorful topped with onion, tomatillo and mango salsa, served with garlicky spinach and Mexican corn-on-the-cob with queso cotija. Their BBQ ribs in a guava glaze was so tender it came right off the bone. Its flavor came from the chili — ground green and red Hatch  — rub.  Cornbread (at bit dried out) came with that.

We would have tried their desserts, but we needed to run to the reading. If you’re in the hood, I would suggest a stop at Amigos.
