“Balaboosta: n. A Yiddish term meaning the perfect housewife, homemaker, wonderful mother, cook & gracious hostess. She does it all and she does it well!”

Before we could choose from the inviting menu created by Chef/Owner Einat Admony, our server recited the night’s specials. We opted for two of them – the thin roasted eggplant and the crispy Brussels sprouts salad with feta. Both worth trying.

While looking over the “Mediterranean meets the Middle East” menu, we saw a mortar filled with hummus ($11) on the next table, and decide to order. So glad we did — as everyone oohed and aahed over it.  “Best hummus I’ve ever had,” said one of our group as we wiped the stone bowl using the thick za’atar pita that accompanied it.

To that, we added a couple more dishes from the “small plates” and “appetizer” portions of the menu. As a cauliflower lover, I enjoyed that crispy version ($13) with currants and pine nuts. Also, don’t miss the charred octopus served with a cipollini onion and greens salad with a pureed carrot sauce ($18). We also sampled the “Israeli Street Fair” ($17), consisting of a 3-taco holder, one filled with sweet potato fries, another a plastic bag of pickled veggies, and a pita filled with chicken and merguez in yogurt.
