Duke’s Original Roadhouse was one of the restaurant casualties when Union Square Cafe moved to the corner of 19th and Park. I was invited to their newest location on the UES near 83rd Street to sample their fare. If you don’t know about it, Duke’s is an affordable place to get a bite with huge-portions and fast, friendly service.

Best bite from their menu is their meaty, juicy wings in a spicy buffalo sauce (single order $10.99). The manager told us that were award-winning. They are that good.

Their  guacamole, salsa and tri-colored chips ($10.99) are fine, what you’d expect a family friendly place. Same with their chilled and crisp Caesar salad ($7.99).

The mahi mahi comes fried in the tacos with diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce and sliced avocado along with chips and guac ($17.99). And their ribs — which the menu correctly stated as sloppy “fall-off-the-bone” — come ($22.99) with two sides. We chose fries and collard greens but ended up with nicely prepared herbed green beans. Our server explained they were out of collard greens and had been for longer than the she could recall!

We finished with a classic kids’ dessert — a warm chocolate chip molten lava cookie topped with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream drizzled in hot chocolate sauce.

A great place to take the kids and not break the bank!
